about

To write Biotic Agents, we paired modern classical music with poetic forms such as the pantoum, villanelle, sonnet and altered minute poem, because we liked the shared vocabulary between form poetry and music, the math and constraints of both. Within each piece, we pay close attention to meter, repetition and cadence, pushing and pulling on these aspects, enjoying the tension.

The central theme of Biotic Agents is learning movement from nature, so form poetry also provides an appropriate frame. As the speaker observes other species, she learns to accept both her limited mobility and the limits of communication. While there is no clear, shared language between her human self and other fauna, no way to truly speak with flora, she can, through poetry and music, attempt the conversation. She can honor bats as ‘different kind[s] of girls’ who ‘climb with their teeth’ or alligators who might ‘grant [her] the tooth to crack and evolve.’ The music and poetry of nature teach the speaker that she is a biotic agent, the strength and fragility of her body are connected to the whole of the natural world.
