about

To write Biotic Agents, we paired modern classical music with poetic forms such as the pantoum, villanelle, sonnet and altered minute poem, because we liked the shared vocabulary between form poetry and music, the math and constraints of both. Within each piece, we pay close attention to meter, repetition and cadence, pushing and pulling on these aspects, enjoying the tension.

The central theme of Biotic Agents is learning movement from nature, so form poetry also provides an appropriate frame. As the speaker observes other species, she learns to accept both her limited mobility and the limits of communication. While there is no clear, shared language between her human self and other fauna, no way to truly speak with flora, she can, through poetry and music, attempt the conversation and learn that she is a biotic agent, the strength and fragility of her body are connected to the whole of the natural world.

A version of Flower Dust, Orchard Light first appeared in The Piedmont Virginian. Michelle references and gratefully acknowledges the following poems by Sylvia Plath as sources of inspiration for her work: "Stings," "Tulips," and "Poppies in July." piedmontvirginian.com/poetry-of-place-apoidea/
